OTTAWA JUDO CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT

Introduction

The Ottawa Judo Club is committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all participants. This Code of Conduct reflects the values and traditions of Judo and outlines the standards of behaviour expected from all athletes participating in club activities, training sessions, and competitions.

By registering with the Ottawa Judo Club, all members agree to conduct themselves in a spirit of fairness, honesty, mutual respect, and adherence to the rules and principles of Judo.

The Spirit of Judo

The essential elements of character development and ethics in Judo are embodied in the principles of sportsmanship and the teachings of Jigoro Kano.

Be polite, respectful, and considerate toward others.

Maintain personal dignity and accept responsibility for your actions.

5. Modesty (Kenkyo)
Remain humble regardless of success or rank.

6. Respect (Sonkei)
Value others, their efforts, and their contributions.

7. Self-Control (Jisei)
Manage emotions and behaviour appropriately, especially under pressure.

8. Friendship (Yūjō)
Build trust, loyalty, and positive relationships with others.

These principles guide not only the practice of Judo, but also leadership, personal growth, and daily life.

Athlete Responsibilities

As a member of the Ottawa Judo Club, I agree to:

  1. Participate in all activities in a spirit of fair play, honesty, and respect, while following the rules and traditions of Judo.
  2. Refrain from using profane, insulting, harassing, discriminatory, or otherwise offensive language or behaviour during any club activity or event.
  3. Treat fellow athletes, instructors, officials, volunteers, event organizers, spectators, and all members of the Judo community with courtesy and respect.
  4. Respect the dignity and safety of others. Harassment, bullying, abuse, intimidation, or any form of inappropriate verbal or physical conduct will not be tolerated.
  5. Help maintain a clean and safe dojo environment. Students must be barefoot on the tatami and wear shoes or sandals at all other times within the facility.
  6. Arrive on time for classes and remain until the conclusion of practice unless permission to leave early has been granted by the instructor.
  7. Attend classes regularly and notify the instructor when unable to attend for a valid reason, so as not to disrupt the progress of training partners and class activities.
  8. Obtain instructor approval before participating in competitions. All athletes participating in examinations or tournaments must be properly registered with the appropriate governing organizations.
  9. Recognize that rank represents a student’s current level of technical skill, physical development, maturity, and understanding of Judo values. Rank is earned through consistent effort and demonstrated character, not awarded as a reward. Higher-ranked students are expected to lead by example and support junior members.
  10. Conduct themselves within the dojo in a manner that supports learning, discipline, cooperation, and mutual respect. Personal conflicts or behaviour that may negatively affect training are not appropriate within the dojo environment.

Commitment

The Ottawa Judo Club believes that the highest potential of Judo is achieved when these principles are practiced consistently both inside and outside the dojo.

By participating in Ottawa Judo Club programs and activities, members acknowledge and agree to uphold this Code of Conduct.
